Olympic National Park

As we were wrapping up the first leg of our retirement tour in Cape Cod we got the call that our son was coming home from his deployment in the military. We took the opportunity to fly out to the Seattle area to visit with him before he has to head back. We also fulfilled a long time dream of seeing the Olympic Mountains on the famous Olympic Peninsula.

We spent 3 wonderful days exploring the high peaks and the ocean beaches. The first hike was an 8 mile out and back to Lake Angeles. The lake was pretty but the views our legs afforded us at the nearby summit area called “The Ledges” were amazing.

All good hikes have a nice bridge over a babbling brook don’t they?
It was October 29th but, the altitude meant temps in the freezing range on our trail. We had a hard time picking out the best picture of ice crystals.
Always on the lookout for a downed tree as a perch for lunch.
This jay was one of three that become our hiking buddies. They were fairly well behaved but they did manage to snag a piece of pretzel that dropped during lunch. Friends for life we guess.
We bet that this would be a wonderful swimming hole in the heat of the summer. Now….not so much.
Check out the windswept cedar we encountered. There were never any branches on the windward side.
Check out the reflections in the lake as we climb up to the ledges.
Mount Baker in the background rising out of Puget Sound it seems. Love the low flying clouds today.
Our friends from lunch joined us on the ledges. No more pretzel pieces for them.
Beautiful ridge line
One more panorama from the ledges.
Look what we found on the way down to the parking area…

Our second hike began at the 5200 foot level outside the Hurricane Ridge Visitors Center. It was closed but the road to it was still open. They are supposed to have 5 to 6 feet of snow up there within the month and that is when they close the road.

Gorgeous gorges!
View from a bit further up the trail.
Laurie gives a two thumbs up inside the gloves. It was a bit on the chilly side but check out the deep blue color of the sky.
Guess it won’t be that long until the snow takes over the scenery here.

Hope the video gives you a sense of what being up in the Olympics is about.

Lunch with a view of Port Angeles on the coast.
How can one be happier??

Day 3 found us on the beaches. We visited a park called Dungeness Spit. It is a 5 mile long spit of sand that leads one out to a lighthouse. Not much elevation gain today but the sights were still spectacular.

Cannot quite see the lighthouse from the beginning of the hike.
Thought that this display put up by the National Park Service was cool. It listed how long it would take for each of these objects to naturally decompose. A styrofoam cup takes an infinite amount of time!!
The beach was “littered” with many HUGE tree remains that have washed up over the years.
Where is Dando now?
There he is!
Nice picture of a polite seagull with Mount Baker in the background.

The “seaweed” in the north Pacific is very different than what we are used to. The pic on the right looked like a sea serpent to us.

Lunchtime found us a bit wind blown. We actually got an early Autumn suntan.
There is the Dungeness Spit Lighthouse. Very pretty.
